Do you need to buy a barcode, or can you make one free?

A short, practical guide.

A barcode itself costs nothing to generate. What sometimes costs money is the number printed inside it, and that only matters in one specific situation.

When a free barcode is all you need

If you control both the printing and the scanning, nobody else ever needs to recognize your number as globally unique. That covers a lot of everyday cases: labeling inventory in your own stockroom, tagging company equipment, organizing a filing system, marking samples in a lab, or printing table numbers and check in codes for an event. A self generated Code128 barcode works perfectly for all of it, for free, forever.

When you actually need to buy one

The moment a product will be scanned at a checkout you do not control, or listed on a marketplace like Amazon that requires a GTIN, UPC, or EAN, the number itself needs to be officially assigned. That assignment comes from GS1, the organization that manages these number ranges worldwide, either directly or through an authorized reseller.

The reason is not the barcode pattern, it is the number underneath it. A self generated EAN13 or UPC that happens to be the correct length will scan and look completely normal, but it is not registered to your brand. It could already belong to someone else's product, which is exactly the kind of collision retail systems are built to prevent.

So which is it for you?

• Labeling inventory, assets, or files that only you scan: generate one for free, Code128 is the easiest choice.
• Selling in a shop you run yourself, where you also control the scanner: generate one for free.
• Selling through a retailer, distributor, or marketplace that is not yours: get an official number from GS1 first, then generate the barcode image itself for free.

GS1 charges a company prefix fee up front plus a renewal fee to keep the range active, and the exact amount depends on how many numbers your business needs. It is worth budgeting for if retail distribution is genuinely the plan, and worth skipping entirely if it is not.
