How to convert MKV to MP4

Plug a drive full of MKV files into a smart TV and the result is a small gamble.
Some televisions play an MKV file without a single complaint. Others show nothing in the menu at all, as if the drive were empty. Nothing is wrong with the drive. The television simply does not recognise the file it is looking at, and the fastest way past that is to convert MKV to MP4, a format almost nothing on earth refuses to play.

MP4 has been the default output of phone cameras, video platforms and editing software for well over a decade. Every browser opens it, every phone plays it, and most televisions, games consoles and media players treat it as the one format they can be sure of. MKV was never designed with that kind of universal support in mind. It was built to be flexible, holding video, several audio tracks and subtitles inside a single file, which is genuinely useful for people organising a personal video collection and far less useful for anyone just trying to watch the file on whatever device happens to be nearby.
There is a small piece of trivia in the name itself. Matroska takes its name from the Russian nesting doll, because the format was designed around the same idea, one thing stored inside another. It is a clever design. It is also part of why so many simpler devices do not know what to do with it.
What actually happens during the conversion
A video file has two separate things going on inside it. There is the container, the outer wrapper, and that is what the letters MKV and MP4 actually refer to. Then there is the video and audio inside that wrapper, usually encoded with something like H.264.
Most MKV files already hold H.264 video, and MP4 accepts H.264 without any trouble. So converting one to the other often means moving the same video into a different wrapper rather than rebuilding it from scratch. When that is possible, the tool takes that path automatically, which is why the conversion can finish almost the moment it starts. Only when the video inside the MKV file uses something MP4 will not accept does a full conversion take over, and that naturally takes longer.
When it does not go instantly
A handful of things can force the slower path: video encoded with an older or less common codec, subtitles baked into the container in a way MP4 does not support, or an unusual number of audio tracks. None of it stops the conversion from finishing. It just means the tool has to rebuild the video rather than repackage it, which takes longer and depends on the length of the file and the power of the computer doing the work.
If a particular MKV file still will not play after converting, the file itself may be damaged rather than simply the wrong format, which is worth ruling out before trying a second converter.
